Buying Guide For The Best Laptops For Engineering Students

We will learn more about the requirements of this type of laptop, what technical characteristics it should have, and tips that will help you decide on one or the other.

The minimum requirements you will need are:

  • 8GB of RAM (if they are 16GB, better)
  • At least 250GB of SSD disk
  • Minimum screen resolution 1920 × 1080
  • Intel i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 processor or higher
  • Dedicated graphics card

Processor

Running many CAD programs with 3D modeling (AutoCAD, Unigraphics, ANSYS) requires a powerful CPU to do the job effectively and efficiently. We recommend a processor at least an Intel Core i5 / Ryzen 5 and up if we can choose an i7 much better since we will have a laptop for more years and the performance is notably superior.

We can find different ranges among the most recommended Intel laptop processors, although the HQ is the most recommended. This series of processors comes with 4 cores and hyper-threading technology, which means much more performance and more weight and size than those of the U series.

HDD

As for hard drives, we do not recommend any model without an SSD as the main one. Compared to a mechanical hard drive, they are much faster, lighter, more relaxed, and more resistant to shocks.

The space must be 250GB if the laptop mounts a single disk, although it all depends on your needs. If you are looking for extra space, you can choose a model with a different HDD.

RAM

How much RAM will you need? It is recommended at least 8GB, but it is 16 better without it, especially for multiple tasks and to maintain fluidity in intensive work.

Dedicated Graphics Card

Workbenches such as CAD, MATLAB, and Solid Works are used for 3D environment applications and video processing. These applications and similar ones require a dedicated graphics card since those that are integrated are not enough to move these programs fluently. It should also be remembered that just as the amount of RAM is essential, the graphics card’s memory is also necessary that the model we choose has at least 2GB.

Nvidia’s GTX series is the most reliable, where models such as the GTX 1650 or 3060 stand out, although we can also find professional cards such as the Quadro series. The problem with professional graphics cards is that they are much more expensive and are only profitable for specific tasks, and as a general rule, we do not recommend them.

Operating system: Windows or Mac?

The Mac laptops work very well, and the manufacturing quality is the best. However, when we talk about a workstation, all environments are mostly Windows native. It all depends on your personal preferences. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages, but Windows is usually the most used system in this type of work due to the greater variety of software and more significant benefits.

Mobility

Here too, it depends on your preferences:

  • The 13-inch models are incredibly versatile.
  • They weigh very little.
  • The battery life is longer.

A 15-inch laptop gives more comfort and space when it comes to making designs without impairing its portability, so they are usually the most chosen for engineering. You can also find them in 17 inches.

Connectivity

Most of the laptops we have added have USB-C, HDMI, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity (or higher depending on the model), and some still have an RJ-45 connection (which can be comfortable if we work a lot in a fixed place). If you need a specific link, you can ask us to recommend the model that suits you best in the comments section.

Difference Between Engineering Laptops & Gaming Laptops

Both Engineering and gaming laptops are very powerful and will give you many advantages. Although they are a bit expensive, they will prove very useful in the long run. A good Engineering laptop will allow you to do your job efficiently. In addition, it will analyze your work down to the essential details. Similarly, gaming laptops can be used for engineering purposes, but they are designed for a completely different job.

10 Best Laptops for Engineering Students

Acer Nitro 5This is an inexpensive laptop. Keep in mind that this is not the best, but it is the most economical with enough energy for all types of students and most professionals.

Mid-range GPU. Some laptops have the MX150, MX250, 940M, and 1050 / 1050Ti and Radon Pros 5XX, and they are all weaker than the GTX 1650 despite being almost the same price. The GPU in this laptop is only below the Radeon Pro 580, GTX 1660Ti, 1060,1070, 1080, and the newer RTX chips.

This GPU is used by gamers looking to play games at high settings and has enough power to tolerate larger models and even large models with most CAD software. So obviously, it’s useful for ANY engineering and software model in school, and it might even be helpful for most professional engineers who don’t have to model something super complicated.

  1. Surface Pro 7

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 – 12.3″ Touch-Screen – 10th Gen Intel Core i5 – 8GB Memory – 128GB SSD (Latest Model) – Platinum with Black Type

Before you say anything, take a look at the web, networks, and forums; and you’ll find hundreds of Engineering students talking and talking about how excellent and cool the Surface Pro has been for each of their classes.

You will never hear an engineering student complain about the Pro. It remains one of the most popular 2-in-1 laptops, if not the most popular, among engineering students.

Also, the Surface Pro with its 2-1 tablet mode can replace all your school supplies: notebooks, textbooks, pens, erasers, markers, etc. This is because it has one of the most realistic note-taking functions and perfectly matches OneNote.

  • It can run 99% of the engineering software you’ll find.
  • You can configure the hardware according to the power you think you will need.
  • The processor can range from a weak m3 core processor with 4GB of RAM to a next-gen core i7 processor with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD. Although as long as you have any model with 8GB of RAM, you should be fine.
  • Another reason to consider buying it is portability; it is very light, ~ 2 pounds.

What makes this laptop so popular is the design. Especially its form factor and battery life, which allows the user to take it everywhere and use it at any time.

  1. Surface Book 3

Microsoft Surface Book 3 (SMW-00001) | 15in (3240 x 2160) Touch-Screen | Intel Core i7 Processor | 32GB RAM | 1TB SSD Storage

The Surface Book 3 laptop is appropriate for professionals in:

  • Electrical, Computer Science, Chemistry, Software
  • Civil, mechanical, aerospace, and aeronautical engineers

If you are a 3D engineer and you hate going into a computer lab, you can have all the benefits of the Surface Pro and still run any 3D model with the Surface Book 3 laptop. If we talk about performance, the Surface Book 3 has the same design as the Surface Pro, but the execution is much more potent because it has a much better CPU and a mid-range or high-end GPU (depending on how you configure yours).

It can support up to 5GHZ CPU. However, the GPU is what will make the difference when it comes to CAD software. You have two options:

  • The GTX 1660Ti is the best consumer GPU for CAD software to date.
  • Even professional 3D modeling engineers will be able to handle 99% of their projects with a 1660Ti.
  • And the slightly cheaper GTX 1660 card also has enough power for virtually all engineering students and most (not all) professionals.

  1. ASUS ProArt StudioBook Pro 17

ASUS ProArt StudioBook Pro 17 Mobile Workstation, 17″ WUXGA NanoEdge Bezel Display, Intel Xeon E-2276M, 32GB ECC DDR4, 2TB

If you are an engineer working with large collaborative projects in SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, Revit, you will have no problem with compatibility plugins and ANY CAD software. That means no bugs, warning pop-ups, no glitches or bugs (although they’re still there, almost nonexistent).

If you get a workstation laptop, get one with a suitable GPU that has a significant lead on gaming cards in terms of shaders / vRAM / clock speed. There are only three types: T2000, T100, and Quadro RTX series (RTX 3000,4000,5000).

If you choose a laptop with these cards, you don’t have to worry about the size of your models. Most will also come with a high-end CPU; make sure you’re getting your money’s worth by getting a next-gen CPU like the 10th or 9th.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 14″ VR Ready 120Hz FHD Gaming Laptop,8Core AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS(Beat i7-10750H),16GB…

The Asus ROG Zephyrus is an Engineering laptop with a 14″ screen. The AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS processor is almost exactly on par with an i7-10750HS CPU. However, where Intel gains a slight advantage in memory latency, AMD regains it in multi-core performance, ideal for multi-threaded applications.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 with Ryzen 9 4900HS processor takes multi-core performance one step further, while 1-8-core performance is practically identical to the Ryzen 7 4800HS; in a 64-core benchmark, it is almost a 10. % faster. For multi-threaded applications, this could give you an advantage.

The graphics card is very respectable, and it’s a mid-range current-gen model with lots of RAM and lots of power to handle any CAD application or PCB design platform.

We usually see an AMD processor paired with an AMD graphics card, which makes this combination interesting. While the AMD RX 5600M is used in other AMD-based laptops on this list, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card generally performs higher in most benchmarks. Engineering applications are more likely to use NVIDIA’s CUDA cores for processing as this is a more established technology.

The screen has full sRGB coverage and good resolution; however, reviews have indicated it is pretty dim, so it probably won’t be a great option if you plan to work outdoors. The 76 Wh battery is respectable and should give you a decent run time when you’re out of power. Many reviews say that the fans are on all the time, even when performing simple tasks, the noise of which could be annoying for some users.

Frequently Asked Questions: Best Laptops For Engineering Students

Do engineering students need a powerful laptop?

No, you don’t. A simple laptop for word processing is acceptable. Most schools have proper engineering computers in the labs if you need to do 3D modeling and whatnot. However, it is very nice to have the ability to run anything and everything on your laptop.

Is an Apple laptop good for engineering students?

The new 16-inch Macbook Pro with a retina display is the only contender for a Macbook for engineering majors. It has a dedicated 8GB graphics card AMD Radeon Pro 5500M on top of the regular Intel UHD Iris graphics. With 64GB of RAM and 2 TB of SSD drive, it is a good investment for your engineering career.

Are Chromebooks good for engineering students?

Of course, you had access to the school computer labs if needed. For most majors, a Chromebook is all you need. But I can’t say the same about engineering… … yeah for school especially knowing that you won’t be doing general work and will have to use specific software; I would say that a Chromebook won’t is ideal.

Best Laptops for Engineering Students

How much RAM is required by an engineering student?

As a general rule of thumb, 8GB is the minimum for engineering students, provided they are more interested in online assignments, browser use, spreadsheet management, and other moderately demanding tasks. However, for civil, mechanical, and engineering students of similar domains, 16GB is a decent brand considering the massive processing workload that might require administration.

Are gaming laptops good for Engineering Students?

Most high-end gaming laptops come with an H-series processor. While these processors are decent and future-proof options, the H-series can be overkill when doing basic tasks.

You should only consider the 10th generation H-series CPU if you want to use the laptop, even as an engineering professional. In most cases, a U-series processor is more than adequate for basic processes unless you want to invest in gaming devices.
