What to Look for in a Planter
Size
When examining pots, the most important thing to look for is size. If you already have plants that need pots, you should have a decent idea of the size you need. But if you buy plants after the fact, you’ll want to make sure they are the correct size.
Keep in mind that as the plants grow, it is sometimes necessary to transfer them to larger containers. Also, the pots can appear much larger online than they are in real life, so be sure to check the dimensions before ordering.
Material
You will also want to consider the material. The pots have traditionally been made of ceramic, either glazed porcelain or unglazed terracotta. However, current options can be built from a number of substances, such as plastic, stone fiber, recycled materials, resin, cement, or metal. All of these materials can offer weather resistance and durability, but be sure to check the product description before placing your planter outside.
Sewer System
Many pots have holes in the bottom to allow for drainage and prevent overwatering. This is not a requirement, but it can be helpful if you are a newbie, as overwatering is one of the most common ways to kill plants. Hanging pots and wall pots do not usually have drainage holes to prevent water from dripping down the walls and floors. Some larger pots don’t have them either, as they are generally designed to stand directly on the ground.
