I have tried Frontier Tumbleweeds starter. They were a good charcoal fire starter, but too expensive. About $1 per tumbleweed. I have also used the weber fire starter cubes. Another solid charcoal fire starter, about .20 per cube. However, the tumbleweeds can shed little shreds of their weeds all over. And the weber cubes flake off bits of the paraffin wax. Not deal-breakers by any means, just slightly annoying.

These Melt Candle Company fire starters are the best deal that I have found yet. About .10 apiece. Even cheaper than the brown lunch bags that I sometimes use. I save brown lunch bags that I have put fried foods on and have soaked up some oil. They make for some good fire starters when placed under a charcoal chimney starter.

The other thing I like about this brand of fire starter is when I break off a piece they don’t create the annoying mess that the tumbleweeds and paraffin wax starters do. I have only needed one square placed under a charcoal chimney starter to get the coals going. Will be buying again when I need some fire starters.

The discovery and use of fire can be argued as the greatest achievement of mankind. It can largely be credited with bringing us out of the animal kingdom and leading us to the global civilization we know and live in today. Not to mention, to this day, it’s still one of the most useful tools at our disposal—helping us with everything from keeping us warm to cooking our meals, and everything in between.

However, your ability to use fire as a tool also depends on your ability to develop it. While our modern homes are typically equipped with devices that can start fires on demand, setting fire to a forest is a different story entirely.

And while adding a lighter to your EDC or outdoor kit is probably a good idea, you might not want to put all your faith in one. As a backup, primary survival tool, or something in between, we suggest picking up one of the best fire starters we’ve gathered for you in the following guide.

2. EasyGoProducts Eco-Stix Fatwood Starter Sticks

Perhaps you love a good fire, but it’s not something you indulge in too often. This kit has a modest 10 pounds of kindling that’s plenty to get you through a season without leaving tons of excess hanging around. Made from the leftover stumps of pine trees, the kindling is all-natural and eco-friendly, plus it’s rich in resins meaning it’ll burn easily. This brand recommends using three sticks when trying to start a fire, so it does require a bit more material than some of the other options on our list. They’re also highly effective, burning from eight to 10 minutes, which should be more than enough time to get a robust fire going.
