Quick Shopping Tips Webcam & Microphone

Here’s a few details to keep in mind when shopping for the best webcam for your conference calls.

  • Streaming vs work cam: The webcam market is mostly split into two categories: work, and livestreaming. Livestreaming webcams can run on the expensive side, sometimes up to $500, in exchange for additional features such as 4K, professional-level microphones, and wide-angle lenses.

  • But since video compression and lag are still problems for most conference call apps, you probably won’t need these features for a home office, with 1080p and often even 720p support being appropriate for most situations.
  • The best webcams on the market always include some sort of built-in microphone, but that doesn’t mean the audio quality is always top-notch –or even good. With webcams usually situated above and away from your face, it’s not uncommon for  built-in mics to be quiet and include plenty of background noise or echo. Consider supplementing your purchase with a headset or desk mic.
  • Lighting is a bonus: While built-in lighting isn’t a standard feature on most consumer-level webcams quite yet, manufacturers like Razer are doing their best to change that. It doesn’t matter how capable your camera is if your office’s lighting is too dark to take advantage of it.

BEST OVERALL Webcam & Microphone

The webcam market is in a strange place right now. Normally, we would just give you our recommendations for which options we think have the best specs for the price, but most of those recommendations have had stock shortages for long enough that a new list of enticing but less well-known contenders has sprung up to challenge them.

That’s why we’re going to break down what has long been our gold standards, plus which new releases are also worth looking into. This is important since even though classics like the Logitech C920 are starting to occasionally come back into stock now, we can’t say that for every webcam from a well-known manufacturer.

An oldie but a goodie, Logitech’s C920 has been the gold standard for webcams since it launched way back in 2013. Even after seven years, nothing has taken its place as the best webcam for video conferencing. There are other versions of the camera, notably the C920S, which comes with a privacy shutter, and the C922, which is designed for streaming.

The best gear for online classes or meetings in Webcam & Microphone 2023

All versions of the Logitech C920 have the same excellent 78-degree field of view lens that can show not only you, but the room behind you or the people sitting next to you. The 1080p sensor is excellent even in low light and its color reproduction is the best we’ve seen. Senior Editor Andrew Freedman wrote a Logitech C920 review for Laptop Mag back in 2016 and he was impressed with both the image quality and width.

He also noted that the dual microphones picked up clear sound, though in a crowded office, they also picked up some background noise. If you’re in a quiet room, these should be fine, though.

FOV: 69 degrees – Video Resolution: 720p 30 fps – Megapixels: 8 – Focus: Autofocus Webcam & Microphone

The Logitech C525 HD Webcam is another 720p webcam, but balances that out by coming from the same producer as our leader, the Logitech C920. Its lower resolution and field of view do make it less powerful, but that also means it might have an edge on store availability. Like the Microsoft Lifecam Studio, this is also an older contender, making the used market a great place to start looking as big box stores have run out of stock.

The Logitech C525 focuses on combining basic features with a portable folding design seen in modern, sold-out contemporaries like the Asus ROG Eye. In addition to a 720p 30 fps camera, a 69-degree field of view, and a built-in mono mic, it also features auto-focus, a 360-degree swivel, built-in “HD light correction,” and one-touch photo-sharing to Facebook.

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic forcing so many of our professional and social interactions online, we are now in the age of the video call. Zoom is the video conferencing platform of choice for our meetings at CNET, and my kids and their friends spend hours on FaceTime, Instagram, and Google Hangouts. Whichever platform you’re using, video chatting has become central to our lives, and it’s an opportune moment to make upgrades.

Top 10 Webcam Microphones of 2023 – Best Reviews Guide 2023

Part of this means learning the fundamentals of a video conference meeting on camera. You don’t need an HD webcam to get good results — optimizing lighting conditions (don’t try to stream in low light), choosing the ideal environment, and positioning the camera lens in just the right way can make your video call look much more professional.

Truly, you don’t need to be a professional YouTube personality or Twitch streamer with a great webcam, even better external mic, and lighting options galore to look good during live streaming and video recording — even a novice can function competently without too much of a learning curve.

First, it’s essential to have the right gear, including the best webcam and microphone. Unfortunately, in most cases, your laptop’s built-in camera and microphone stink — and they’re preventing you from coming across as professionally as possible on video conferencing calls.

The best Webcam & Microphone for home working in 2023 Digital Camera.

You should ditch the integrated webcam and invest in a standalone webcam and stereo microphone with noise cancellation. Even a cheap webcam with autofocus and a decent microphone can improve picture quality and sound enough to take things to the next level when on a videoconference.

Upgrading your audio and video tech is fairly easy from a technical perspective, however, and relatively affordable — and it will dramatically improve your production values in virtual meetings. We’ve compiled a shortlist of some gear that will enhance your video chatting with input from CNET’s on-camera video team, all of whom are working from home now, too. Our favorite picks for the best webcam and external mic options are below, and we’ll update this periodically.

(Note that prices are accurate at time of original publication, but may fluctuate — especially given the surging demand for this type of gear. Also, availability and delivery times are changing all the time, so be sure to check before moving forward with any purchase.)

Those using laptops or all-in-one computers are already doing better than most, but with so many of these devices equipped with low-resolution cameras, you may still wish to upgrade to a dedicated web camera.

Top 10 Webcam & Microphone Instant Streaming Studio 2023

Anyone using a desktop PC will need to buy a separate webcam regardless, but thankfully, the best webcams will more than cover their needs. And, because they come in a variety of resolutions as well as budgets, there’s something to fit every demand, whether it’s for daily video meetings or to connect with loved ones.

Because of the increase in people looking for webcams, we found some of the best webcams today. We also highlighted some webcam deals from lesser-known brands at the top of this page. These webcams are in stock and offer decent alternatives to the better-known products on our list – and at greatly reduced prices as well.

Our new telecommuting culture means that popular webcam mainstays, like the Logitech c920 series, have been selling out everywhere from Best Buy to Amazon for the past few months. As we start a new year, there’s now more listings for these popular choices than there were early into the pandemic, but they’re still not always available at your favorite stores. Also, their absence from the market has given rise to plenty of enticing alternatives, some with unique features of their own.

What should you look for when buying a webcam & Microphone

In this strange new world of work from home, you might feel a bit overwhelmed looking at web cameras to shop; After all, all these cheap models on Amazon look the same, right? Webcams are generally marketed with resolution (720p, 1080p, 4K, etc.) and frame rate because this is the most important factor for most people when purchasing a product, but there are many other considerations that make a camera web is ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

The first thing to consider is what you need your webcam for.

For working professionals or office staff, most conference programs like Zoom or Microsoft Teams will restrict the quality of your stream to 1080p 30fps resolution to preserve bandwidth. Google meets goes one step further and restricts its quality to 720p, as this is the standard resolution on most built-in portable cameras.

If you plan to use a webcam solely for these work-related calls then there is no point buying a powerful 4k model as you simply won’t see the benefit. However, light and color detection will vary for each model, so you will still see a variation in recording quality depending on the webcam you buy.

For content creators like YouTubers or Streamers, there is a range of powerful webcams available, some of which reach 4K 60fps resolution for smooth, fluid video. These webcams are overkill for occasional use, but with features like a variable field of view (or FOV) and adjustable resolution or zoom, the extra money could be a worthwhile investment for your hobby.

So if you’re willing to expand your horizons, there are plenty of other choices with their own unique advantages, from entry-level streaming cameras to webcams from lesser-known brands. That’s why we’ve collected this list of the best webcams…and the best back-up webcams for if you can’t find them at the stores you like or with the features you need.

Best wireless earbuds and Bluetooth headphones for phone callsBest webcamLogitech Brio Pro 4K webcam

After the masses began working from home in mid-March, it became difficult to find a brand name webcam anywhere. My favorites — Logitech’s StreamCam and the 4K-capable Brio — are pricey and frequently out of stock, but worth the money if you can find them.

In the meantime, if your laptop’s integrated camera isn’t doing the trick, you can use a tripod and your phone’s HD camera to boost video chat quality when live streaming.

Here’s how to do it.$200 AT WALMART Fix the lightingLume Cube Webcam & Microphone

I’ve tried many, many lights over the past few months and, so far, the Lume Cube is my favorite. This bright LED light is highly adjustable — with a physical toggle to change the brightness and color temperature — and the nifty display shows all the levels and how much juice is left in the USB-C rechargeable battery. You can position it in landscape or portrait mode using the included suction cup mount.

Webcam With Microphone For Laptop for sale | In Stock 2023

About that mount. I should note that there are plenty of Amazon user complaints about it not working properly, but I can’t seem to replicate the issue with my Lume Cube. I’ve stuck it securely to the back of multiple laptops and a standalone monitor, and I can’t pull the thing off — even with sustained force — without first loosening the suction mechanism.

My backup choice is the Joby Beamo Mini, which is about the same price as the Lume Cube. It’s extremely compact, waterproof and — capable of blasting out 1,000 lumens — incredibly bright, though the iOS app and included diffuser make it simple to dial in the perfect amount of light. It has a magnetic back that will stick to any metal surface and will also screw on to a tripod.

Nothing can torpedo an online meeting quicker than background noise and audio that’s cutting in and out, and your laptop’s lousy built-in microphone may be the culprit. Once you’ve added a decent webcam to your setup, you’ll be in better shape — but a standalone microphone will make you sound clear, rich and full. This Blue Yeti model has long been a staple of podcasters and streamers, and it’s what I use when I record audio or participate in a high-stakes video chat.

Yes, it looks like something you’d see in a 1940s radio station, but the audio technology is 100% modern. It has three capsule microphones, four pickup patterns (for different kinds of recording) and just enough controls to help optimize the way you sound without overloading you with super technical features.

It’s hard to multitask on a web conference: Opening and closing apps, resizing browsers and windows, all while you’re talking to your boss on your Google hangout or Zoom call — it can all be a bit much. One solution is to offload all of your audio and video recording tasks to your phone — which may have a better camera, video quality, and mic technology, anyway — freeing up your laptop to take notes, consult documents and spreadsheets, or whatever else. (Here’s how to do it.)

If you take this route, you’re going to want to have an adjustable tripod that can securely hold your phone steady — and at a flattering angle. I like this tripod kit from Joby, currently on sale for $30, which includes a clamp that’s big enough to accommodate my iPhone XS Max. And I also like the company’s bendy Gorillapods, which can be wrapped around posts or other nonflat surfaces.

$40 AT BEST BUYGet a laptop with a decent processorLenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Webcam & Microphone

If you’re running an older MacBook Air or Windows laptop that came out several years ago, you’ll find that a single Zoom session can send your computer’s fans whirring and reduce your multitasking options to zero. Getting a newer laptop with an updated processor and webcam software — a ninth- or 10th-gen Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 should do the trick — will make those videoconferencing sessions a lot easier to bear.

I recently put aside my aging MacBook Air and picked up a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga and have been amazed by all that I was missing out on: blazing speed (courtesy of the modern Intel processor), USB-C ports and a touchscreen display. It currently starts at $1,377. For other recommendations, check out
