Sentinel may be given along with Capstar, which treats flea infestation.

Description

Your furry friend must have a current heartworm test result on file with your veterinarian in order to be prescribed heartworm medication. Please visit your veterinarian to have this test performed annually to protect your four-legged friend. Sentinel Spectrum is a monthly oral preventive prescription that guards against heartworms, adult roundworms, adult hookworms, whipworms, and prevents the development of flea eggs. It protects your dog against heartworm disease and intestinal worms, all in a palatable, beef-flavored chewable.

Uses

Sentinel Spectrum is indicated for the prevention of heartworm disease. It is also formulated to help prevent and control flea populations, and for the treatment and control of adult roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and tapeworm infections in dogs and puppies six weeks of age and older and weighing at least two pounds.

Possible Side Effects

The following adverse reactions have been reported in dogs after administration of milbemycin oxime, lufenuron, or praziquantel: vomiting, depression/lethargy, pruritus, urticaria, diarrhea, anorexia, skin congestion, ataxia, convulsions, salivation, and weakness.

Drug & Food Interactions

There are no known contraindications to the use of Sentinel Spectrum.

Precautions

Treatment with fewer than 6 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Sentinel Spectrum, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infections. At the discretion of the veterinarian, infected dogs should be treated to remove adult heartworms. This medication is not effective against adult D. immitis. Mild, transient hypersensitivity reactions, such as labored breathing, vomiting, hypersalivation, and lethargy, have been noted in some dogs treated with milbemycin oxime carrying a high number of circulating microfilariae.

These reactions are presumably caused by the release of protein from dead or dying microfilariae. Do not use in puppies less than six weeks of age. Do not use in dogs or puppies less than two pounds of body weight. The safety of this medication has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in lactating females. Studies have been performed with milbemycin oxime and lufenuron alone. Not for use in humans. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children.

Side Effects:

Side effects may include vomiting, depression/lethargy, itching, hives, diarrhea, loss of appetite, clogged pores, loss of muscle coordination, rapid and uncontrollable shaking, salivation, and weakness. Notify your veterinarian if side effects appear and remain troublesome. Other side effects may occur, if you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Cautions:

Dogs should be tested for adult heartworms and treated if necessary before starting Sentinel Spectrum. This product does not treat adult heartworms and can cause a shock-like reaction in heartworm-positive dogs. Do not use on dogs under 6 weeks of age and weighing under 2 lbs. The safety of Sentinel Spectrum has not been evaluated in nursing females. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.

Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.

Sentinel for Dogs: Reviews!

What do real-life owners who use Sentinel say about the product?

Well, Sentinel is one of those products that people love or hate (but mostly love!)

There are many devoted users who converted to Sentinel from spot-on products. They love the no fuss, no mess way that it’s given. They also love how it doesn’t irritate the dogs’ skin in the same way that some spot-on products do.

Sentinel for dogs also rates highly with owners of long-haired dogs. Again, it comes down to the convenience of an oral product, which is so much easier than hunting for the skin on a wriggly thick-coated dog.

The odd dissatisfied voice feels cheated that Sentinel doesn’t kill adult fleas. However, the product doesn’t claim to do this. Whereas, the savvy user describes Sentinel as a ‘slow burner’ at getting rid of flea infestations but never has a problem when used regularly.

What About a Sentinel Rebate

Did you know you can get rebates on sentinel products? As of 2018, Sentinel will offer a $10 rebate for 6 doses on their Sentinel spectrum chewable tablets and a $25 rebate on 12 doses.

If you’re interested in the Sentinel flavor tabs then worry not! For 6 doses you can receive a $7 rebate and for 12 doses you’ll receive a $20 rebate.

Remember, to qualify for a Sentinel rebate you will have to submit a form completed with both your invoice and coupon code. You can find these forms directly on the Sentinel pet website.
