Bird Control for Fruit Trees

Knitted Bird Netting can also be used to protect fruit trees. It can be used as an instant canopy guard (not secured around the trunk or to the ground), but is recommended to secure Bird Netting for better protection. To do this, tie two sides of the Bird Netting to two long poles. With two people, use the poles to drape the netting over the top of the tree. Once that is finished, secure netting to the trunk of the tree.

Commercial Bird Protection

It can be used to keep birds from roosting on or around outdoor structures such as barns, garages and attics. On a larger scale, Bird Netting can also be used to secure industrial and commercial buildings from birds, including pigeons (sometimes called Anti-Pigeon Netting).

Aquatic Bird Control Bird Nettings

Another use for Bird Netting is protection for fish and other aquatic animals in ponds or small water features. It not only protects against birds, but also otters, weasels, and other fish-eating nuisances by creating a secured barrier.

When putting up Bird Netting over a pond, it is recommended to have 2 or more people around to help. Stretch the Bird Netting over the pond, keeping it high enough off the water to prevent sagging. Use pegs to secure the Bird Netting around the perimeter of the pond. If there is a larger gap between the pond and Bird Netting than desired, simply attach more netting to the perimeter and secure directly to the ground. For large ponds, suspend wire, such as PolyLine or Agro-Line, or cord over the pond for added support (to prevent the Bird Netting from sagging). Bird Netting can be joined by Netting Clips or lacing for larger sizes.

Secure netting to tree trunk ensuring that there are no gaps for birds to enter through.

Chicken Coops

Because of it’s lightweight design, Bird Netting can be used as the top to chicken enclosures. Simply fasten it to the top of the coop using staples, nails or lacing.

There’s nothing like the taste of your own home-grown fruit and vegetables. Or perhaps you’re a vineyard-owner, cultivating all those wonderful grapes for your much-loved wine!

The problem many growers run into, though, is that birds often eat a lot of unpicked fruit before humans get a chance to harvest it. Sometimes, they can almost clear a whole crop!

Until recently, bird netting was one of the few options available to protect certain plants like grapes and cherries. But there are some concerns over this method. Keep reading for 5 problems with using netting to protect your produce.

1. High-Cost Bird Nettings

At around $6.50 per square foot, netting is a very costly choice. That small figure might not sound like very much, but when you consider the amount you’d need to cover the average fruit tree, the costs start adding up.

A medium-wide-boughed, 10ft fruit tree would need at least a 38ft x 38ft section of netting, and the cost suddenly shoots up to almost $250. Now multiply that by several trees, and the figure’s pretty eye-watering.

Bird-X Standard Bird Netting Ideal for Gardens and Lightweight Applications, 100' by 14'

2. Often Not Reusable Bird Nettings

Bird netting is often sold as being reusable, so you should be able to cover your trees effectively, each season.

However, depending on the quality of your netting, the fabric can become dry and brittle. This can cause it to break, or be difficult to re-drape.

3. Can Damage Plants Bird Nettings

The small holes in the netting are what keeps the birds out. Unfortunately, though, it can also damage the very plants it’s used to protect.

Bird netting will often sever leaves and break off fruit when there’s a heavy wind. This can impact on your harvest and, if you’re a commercial grower, it can affect your profits, too.

4. Can Trap and Injure Bird Nettings

Sadly, poorly-installed netting allows birds to enter it, and then traps them inside.

Smaller birds, like tiny sparrows and baby birds, can get tangled up in the mesh itself, causing damage to their beaks and other extremities.

Birds can also get their legs and feet entangled, so they’re trapped and unable to safely fly away.

5. Can Put You at Risk Bird Nettings

It’s not just birds that get caught up in netting. In fact, many owners have reported finding snakes and other wildlife within their mesh-covered plants.

Of course, the danger to cultivators is great, and freeing a frightened trapped snake is a risky endeavor.

Rabbits, lizards, and squirrels, for example, have been found both dead and alive. And dead animals attract other pests, who can also become trapped inside.

The Verdict on Bird Netting

Protecting your crops from those pesky birds can be hard work. A lot of people have been forced to use bird netting as a deterrent, simply because there haven’t been many alternatives.

Unfortunately, this common material has a few major failings. You should definitely factor these into your decision when it comes to caring for your plants.

The Horrible Truth About Bird Netting

Recently the Lloyds Bank in the South Shields, the UK, had a terrible experience with its bird control method: bird netting. Two seagulls have been found dead on the rooftop of the building next to a seriously injured pigeon.

What Happened

Lisa Waugh spotted the bodies of the seagulls and a pigeon that seemed to be trapped in the nets placed on the rooftop. She immediately notified the RSPCA, an association specialised in animal rescue along with the fire brigades. Unfortunately, the condition of the pigeon was too critical to save: the nets had damaged its wing to the point that a recovery seemed to be impossible.

“The nets are killing our wildlife. There needs to be an alternative. It was horrible to see the bodies of two dead birds on the roof and the pigeon distressed.” – said Lisa when being interviewed. The issue has been raised at the bank, that is now looking for other, less harmful bird control solutions. “We are aware of the concerns regarding the nets and are looking at alternative options as a priority.” – said a spokesman for Lloyds Bank. Why Bird Nettings Can Be Dangerous

Netting is one of the most common and utilised bird control methods. It is proven to be really effective by physically blocking pest birds from the desired areas. An issue with bird netting can occur if it is not installed properly. In this casethe birds can still land on the area but then they get trapped inside. Smaller bird spices like sparrows could get tangled up in the net itself and seriously damage their extremities. It is really important to consider these disadvantages when choosing bird netting in order to avoid fatal situations like what happened at Lloyd Bank.

The Horrible Truth About Bird Netting

An Animal-Friendly Solution Bird Nettings

Urbanised areas inevitably attract birds seeking for food and shelter. Keeping birds away from residential areas is essential for different reasons: birds can transmit several diseases, leave droppings that damage the paintwork, cause leakage by pecking holes in roofing and even cause fire by building nests in chimneys.

Bird Control Group offers cost-effective solutions for protecting your building/rooftop from birds: Automated Laser Bird Deterrent.  This system is proven to be very effective because it takes advantage of a bird’s natural instinct: birds perceive the approaching laser beam as a physical danger and disperse to seek safety. It works very well as a long-term solution because birds do not get accustomed to it.The Horrible Truth About Bird Netting

Unlike netting, the laser deterrent is not harmful to the birds and has been awarded by The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for its innovation, effectiveness and animal friendliness.
