The GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier can collect up to 45 pints of moisture from your home in one day. While this is a smaller capacity than some of the other models we’ve reviewed like the Soleus Air DSX-70EMW-01 Dehumidifier, this dehumidifier does have an in-built pump.

The in-built pump can automatically empty the water out of the dehumidifier, saving you time and effort emptying the water tank yourself.

GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier: Features

The GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier is designed to work best in spaces up to 1,500 square feet. Its capacity is 45 pints, which is smaller than the Frigidaire FAD704DWD, but it is one of the only models we reviewed that has an in-built pump.

Once you’ve connected up the pump drain hose, the pump will automatically empty out the water in the dehumidifier once it reaches full capacity. Alternatively, you can still empty the water bucket manually, if you prefer.

The GE APEL45LY features three different fan speeds and a humidistat. Its LED digital display will also alert you when the bucket is full and it has an auto shut-off feature too.

Energy Star-rated, this dehumidifier shouldn’t cost you or the environment, too much to run. What this GE dehumidifier is lacking though, are smart features such as app-controlled functions. Other models such as the Soleus Air DSX-70EMW-01 Dehumidifier also have modes that automatically adapt to the different levels of moisture in each of the rooms in your home.

At under $300, this dehumidifier is around an average price for a model with all the functions. Although, for less than $50 more, you can purchase a dehumidifier with smart features.

GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier: Design & warranty

The GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier is one of the only models we reviewed that isn’t white. It has a nice finish and also features LED digital controls for easy programming and use.

Even though this model does have a pump for automatic water removal, there are still four hidden wheels that make this dehumidifier much easy to move or empty out.

The warranty of the GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier is one year, which is fairly standard, but longer warranties are available.

GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier: User reviews

User reviews mention how quiet this dehumidifier is, suggesting it resembles the ‘noise of normal fan’. The in-built pump also goes down really well with users, with many saying it saves them multiple trips to empty the tank out. Many users suggest that this dehumidifier is particularly useful for basements.

Some more negative reviews state that the GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier didn’t last longer than a year, which is not ideal when you’ve spent over $300.

Should you buy the GE APEL45LY Dehumidifier?

If you want a quiet dehumidifier, the GE model will deliver and its in-built will be invaluable in saving you multiple tank emptying trips to the sink or a drain. However, if controlling your dehumidifier via your phone is important to you, you’re better off with a smart-enabled model.

When it’s humid, unfortunately, that stickiness doesn’t always stay outside. It can creep into your home and make already wet spaces like the bathroom and laundry room even damper. For most, a home between 30-50% humidity is ideal (higher in the summer and lower in the winter). When humidity creeps above 50%, space can become a breeding ground for mold, mildew, dust mites, and other critters.

Needs Dehumidification? – Looking for Solutions 2023

That’s where a dehumidifier comes in. Unlike a humidifier, which adds moisture to the air, a dehumidifier removes excess water from your environment, preventing mold, mildew, and other issues that can harm your health — or your home. Most dehumidifiers draw humid air in through an inlet using an internal compressor and fan. The air goes through cool coils that pull out excess moisture and condense it into the reservoir. Dry air is then propelled back into the room.

The Good Housekeeping Institute regularly tests home appliances including dehumidifiers. When we select dehumidifiers to evaluate, we choose condensing models, which remove far greater quantities of moisture from the air than desiccant models (which use a water-absorbing material), or thermoelectric dehumidifiers (which use an electric charge to “attract” humidity).

We look at things like if it has a pump (which allows you to drain water upwards into a sink or through a window), the noise level while running, and efficiency of operation. We also look at the ease of use, such as whether it has wheels to make it easy to maneuver into place if it has easy-to-operate controls, and if removing and emptying the bucket is easy to do.

What kind of dehumidifier do I need?

  • If humidity is a problem throughout the, an integrated whole-home system may be the way to go.
  • If your moisture issues are more seasonal or confined to only some rooms of the house, a portable residential unit is your best bet. Smaller dehumidifiers tend to be less money and easier to move, but they can be less efficient when running at a constant rate. It’s best to err on the side of caution by buying a larger unit than a smaller one and having the unit run less frequently.

How do I pick the right size dehumidifier?

The size of your room and how damp it is will determine how big or small your dehumidifier should be. Dehumidifiers are sized based upon how many pints of moisture they can remove in a day: The larger and wetter your space is, the more powerful your unit will need to be. For example, a 70-pint dehumidifier can cover a very damp 700 square feet or a slightly damp 1,200 square feet. Keep in mind: If the room is cooler (say, a basement), the dehumidifier will remove less moisture since colder air contains less moisture than warmer air.

  • Small: Removes 20-25 pints of moisture at 65°F, or 30-40 pints at 80°F (about 400-600+ square feet)
  • Medium: Removes 30-35 pints of moisture at 65°F, or 50-60 pints at 80°F (about 800-1,000+ square feet)
  • Large: Removes 40-55 pints of moisture at 65°F, or 70-90 pints at 80°F (about 1,200-1,500+ square feet)

GE – Dehumidifiers – Heating, Venting & Cooling 2023

A note on DOE 2019: In 2019, the Department of Energy (DOE) changed the parameters of measuring the capacity of dehumidifiers. In the past, dehumidifiers were officially tested at 80°F but since June 13, 2019, dehumidifiers are required to be tested at a lower temperature, 65°F, “to more accurately reflect expected performance in a basement setting.” This means that a dehumidifier tested in accordance with the new protocols will likely report a smaller capacity. For example, a previously labeled “70-pint dehumidifier” will now likely be a 50-pint dehumidifier under new guidelines. We’ve included picks that were tested under both standards and noted sizing differences below.

What features matter when it comes to buying a dehumidifier?

  • Hose connection. If you’ll be using a large-capacity dehumidifier for a particularly wet job, finding a dehumidifier with a hose connection can save you from having to empty the machine manually. If you can’t find one with a hose, look for one that has a pump to send water up to a sink or window. Otherwise, you’ll have to physically (and frequently) dump the captured water.
  • A filter indicator reminds you when to clean your air filter.
  • An auto-humidistat can sense the moisture in the air and turn it off automatically once the desired level is reached.
  • A low-temperature setting and/or auto-defrost is helpful if the dehumidifier will be in a cool place since it ensures the unit can properly operate in cooler temps.

How do I make sure my dehumidifier runs efficiently?

  1. Make sure airflow isn’t restricted. Some units have vents on top, allowing them to sit against a wall. Others have vents on the sides which means they shouldn’t be pushed up against walls or furniture.
  2. Regularly clean the air filter. The dehumidifier won’t work as well if it’s dirty. Make sure you’re tending to it at least once a week.
  3. Be sure to unplug the machine whenever you’re emptying the container or cleaning it.

Are GE dehumidifiers any good?

It is highly rated by consumers in many reviews, which is among the reasons why it is one of the five brands I recommend to visitors on this site. All the units in the GE Dehumidifier range are effective, reliable appliances with good, all-around performance and stand in comparison with any of the other leading brands.

How long do GE dehumidifiers last?

3-5 YearsDehumidifier would last 3-5 Years when used and maintained appropriately.

Why does my GE dehumidifier keep shutting off?

If your dehumidifier keeps shutting off, the issue may be with the humidity control or humidistat. … Having to set the control to a lower setting in order to reach the desired humidity level is a sign that the humidistat is defective and needs to be replaced.

Is there a recall on GE dehumidifiers?

On January 30, 2014, Gree expanded the recall to include General Electric (GE). … All of the recalled dehumidifiers were manufactured in China. West Bend has had several fire claims caused by the defective dehumidifiers. Damages total more than $1 million.
