A good electric stove (or range, whatever you call them) should allow you to easily cook a full-size meal and keep it warm—on the stove or in the oven. Over the years, we’ve researched and reviewed different electric freestanding stoves in person and online. The GE JB735 stood out from the pack. It comes in five different finishes, and it has as complete a set of cooking features as you’ll find in a range that costs less than $1,000.

Setup Process: Easy—provided your state (and gas line position) cooperate

Delivery from Home Depot went smoothly, but because we live in Washington, D.C.—where all gas stoves have to (by law) be installed by a certified plumber—installation was a two-step process. Regulations vary by state and most retailers will inform you of all the required steps when you purchase the appliance, but if you purchase the appliance online, be sure to call the retailer and verify the installation process. 

Despite the hassle of having to wait an additional three days to have a plumber install our oven, D.C.’s law did benefit us in an unexpected way. When the old range was removed and the gas line exposed, we discovered that the pipe’s position was about a foot off the floor—far higher than most conventional set-ups (just one of the joys of owning a house built in 1920). As a result, the line couldn’t connect to the new stove mounting, which is positioned on the back of the stove about 6 inches off the floor. Luckily, a plumber was there to lower the pipe.

Interestingly, though most retail sites include guides and checklists for installations, none provide measurements for the spacing of your gas connection. I did eventually find this info in the installation manual, but I didn’t knowI needed to check that prior to the plumber’s visit. If you have a gas mount that sits more than 8 or so inches off the floor, do your due diligence by either buying a stove to match your gas configuration, or budget the time and money you’ll need to move the pipe.

Other than that time-consuming hiccup, the setup was a breeze. Just make sure you purchase a new gas flex connection kit (existing hook-ups cannot be reused) and ensure you have a standard 110-volt three-pronged outlet and gas shutoff directly behind the oven’s intended spot.

When my wife and I started shopping for our first home, one of the items on our must-have list was a gas range. We love to cook. My wife went to culinary school and while I flail a bit in the kitchen—cooking less by instinct and more by following recipes to the letter—I enjoy the effort (if not always the results).

When we finally closed on our home, we did get a gas range—albeit a sub-par model with one burner that didn’t auto-ignite and baseline button controls that made a mystifying sequence of sounds.

That’s why we were excited to upgrade to the GE JGB700SEJSS—a self-cleaning model with a sleek, fingerprint-resistant slate exterior. Read on for our assessment of the range’s setup process, design, performance, and competition.

The best electric stove

This GE offers the best balance of build quality and cooking features in an affordable electric range, and it’s available in more finishes than most.$820 from Home Depot

The GE JB735 offers as much space in the oven and versatility on the cooktop as an electric range at this price. The smooth cooktop is sensibly laid out, with its two strongest and most-versatile heating elements in the front row, where they’re easiest to reach. The 5.3-cubic-foot oven is big enough to fit a large, 26-pound turkey or a 15-by-20-inch baking stone, and it has a convection mode and two types of self-cleaning modes (high-heat or steam-and-wipe). The previous version of this range, the JB750, received largely positive reviews and seemed generally reliable, so we’re optimistic about the current model.

Keep in mind, though, that because this model is new, we’re as yet unsure how it will perform in the short- to medium-term, and so far there aren’t many reviews on retail sites that we can draw conclusions from. We’ll monitor customer feedback for any evidence of widespread defects and update the guide as we know more. We do wish the oven came with a third rack.

If the GE JB735 is unavailable or you just don’t like the brand, the new Frigidaire Gallery GCRE3060A is a good alternative. Both stoves’ specs and features are similar, and on paper they don’t have any significant advantages or disadvantages compared to each other. But the Frigidaire is only available in two finishes (down from five). It hasn’t been available for as long, either, so it has fewer owner ratings, which makes us a little less confident in its quality and reliability.

If you don’t want to spend quite so much on a stove, we recommend any electric, freestanding GE range that fits your budget. The GE JB645 stands out as a particularly good balance of cooking features and build quality for an affordable price. It has a smooth cooktop with an array of power elements you’d expect to find in much pricier stoves plus a sizable 5.3-cubic-foot oven that’s bigger than most competing models. There’s no convection mode, typical for stoves this cheap. But it comes with high-heat self-cleaning, which is uncommon among similar ranges.
