9 Lawn Care Tips for the Summer
The weather is finally warming up and that means it’s time to start thinking about your lawn! Summer is the time of year when your grass grows the most, so you need to make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep it healthy. In this blog post, we will discuss 9 tips for taking care of your lawn during the summer months. Follow these tips and your lawn will be looking great all season long!
#1. Mow regularly and at the right height.
During the summer, your grass will grow quickly so you will need to mow it more often than usual. Be sure to set your mower blade to the appropriate height for your grass type – if you cut it too short, it will be more susceptible to damage from heat and drought. Additionally, not mowing the grass at the right height could possibly lead to thatch buildup.
Thatch is a layer of dead and living grass, along with other organic matter, that builds up on your lawn over time. Too much thatch can prevent water and nutrients from reaching the roots of your grass, leading to unhealthy plants. If you think you may have a thatch problem, be sure to talk to your local lawn care professional, such as Heroes Lawn Care. They will be able to help you determine if thatch is an issue and give you advice on how to fix it.

#2. Don’t forget to sharpen your mower blade regularly!
A dull blade will tear the grass rather than cut it cleanly, which can damage the plant. A sharp blade, on the other hand, will provide a clean cut that helps the grass to heal quickly and better resist disease. Be sure to check your mower blade every few weeks and sharpen or replace it as needed. Lawn care doesn’t only apply to the grass on your lawn, but also the equipment you use to clean it.
Here’s the process of sharpening your mower blade:
-Use a file or grinder to remove any nicks or burrs from the blade.
-Be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses while doing this!
-Sharpen the blade using a circular motion.
-If you don’t feel comfortable sharpening the blade yourself, you can always take it to a local hardware store or lawn care shop and they will be happy to do it for you.
#3. Water early in the day.
The best time to water your lawn is in the early morning before the sun gets too hot. Watering later in the day can cause evaporation, which means your plants won’t get as much water as they need. Additionally, watering at night can lead to fungal growth because the grass stays wet for too long. If you water in the morning, you’ll give your grass time to dry off before nightfall.
#4. Don’t overwater!
It’s important to give your lawn the right amount of water – too much or too little can both be detrimental. If you overwater, the roots of your grass will start to rot because they’re not getting enough oxygen. On the other hand, if you don’t water enough, your grass will turn brown and die. The best way to know how much water your lawn needs is to check the weather forecast and then adjust accordingly. In general, most lawns need about one inch of water per week.
#5. Use a mulching mower.
Mulching your lawn is a great way to fertilize your grass and help it retain moisture. When you mow, the blades of your mower chop up the grass and spread it around. This provides nutrients for the plants and helps them to better resist drought conditions. If you don’t have a mulching mower, you can always spread some mulch around by hand after you’ve mowed the lawn.
#06: Get Rid of Pests
Pests can wreak havoc on your lawn, causing brown patches, yellowing grass, and even killing your plants. The most common lawn pests are grubs, chinch bugs, and sod webworms. Be sure to check your lawn regularly for signs of these pests and take action immediately if you see any.
There are a few different ways to get rid of pests:
-If you have a small infestation, you can try using a pesticide. Be sure to follow the directions carefully and only use as much as is necessary – too much pesticide can be just as harmful to your plants as the pests themselves!
-Another option is to introduce predators into your yard. For example, if you have a grub problem, you can introduce ladybugs into your lawn – they will eat the grubs and help to control the population.
-You can also try using a biological control, such as Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT), which is a bacteria that kills caterpillars and other pests.
#07: Fertilize Your Lawn
Fertilizing your lawn is important because it helps the grass grow strong and resist disease. Fertilizing is one of the most common lawn care techniques, but still, proves to be effective. There are a few things you should keep in mind when fertilizing your lawn:
-The best time to fertilize is in the spring, around the same time you would start mowing your lawn.
-Be sure to use a fertilizer that is specifically designed for lawns – using the wrong kind of fertilizer can actually harm your plants.
-Apply the fertilizer evenly, following the directions on the package. It’s important not to use too much or too little – too much fertilizer can burn your grass, while too little won’t be effective.
#08: Aerate Your Lawn
Aerating your lawn is a great way to improve the health of your grass and help it resist disease. Aeration involves poking small holes in the soil, which allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots of the plants. You can use an aerator attachment on your lawnmower – simply attach it to the mower and then mow as usual.
#09: Overseed Your Lawn
Overseeding is a great way to thicken up your lawn and fill in any bare patches. Overseeding involves spreading grass seed over your existing lawn. The best time to overseed is in the fall, around the same time you would fertilize your lawn. Be sure to use a good quality grass seed and spread it evenly – too much seed in one area can cause the seedlings to compete for resources and actually harm the growth of your lawn.
By following these lawn care tips, you can keep your lawn healthy and looking great all summer long! Happy gardening!
